Career Development and Strategy

Some people have followed the advice of the old axiom, “Find something you love to do and find a way to have people pay you for doing it, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” A few people might feel inclined to tell others I have followed that saying. I will tell you I have worked many days. But I do love what I do. With professional growth, career selection requires planning. Most people change their jobs and possibly their careers several times during their lifetime. It is essential to reevaluate your choices and stand by what you do. I had a position I loved at first, but grew into something I had problems with. I had to walk away. I did not like the person it demanded that I become.

Career Planning is a process that should be accomplished alone.

As you follow these steps, remember that a well-digger is the only profession that starts at the top and works its way down.

There are a few steps I’d recommend following in career planning.

  1. Evaluate where you are in your life. Do you like the person you’ve become? If the answer is yes, then the other six steps may be easy, but if the answer is no, ask yourself the following question. If you could do anything you wanted, what would you do? Answer realistically: if you lost a leg, don’t tell me you want to be an Olympian sprinter.
  2. Now, take the time to do a personal assessment. You have identified your interests and, most likely, your values. Now, you need to locate and access your talents and abilities.
  3. Study your local market for your employment analysis. Tape into your network and determine the value of being someone in that field.
  4. In doing so, you should understand the geographical, economic, technological, and social influences of working in the field you’re considering.
  5. It is now time for the application process. It would be best if you wrote a resume and cover letter. This may not be as easy for some as it is for others, but there are free templates online, and there are sites that list the how words or critical phrases needed in them. Many people have received great help from their local Toast Masters. I am going to take this opportunity to thank the Community Colleges. I attended Valley Community College in San Bernardino in the early eighties. However, I stopped attending after the birth of my second child. I returned to college when my third oldest and her half-brother wished to go to college. I then received my Associate’s degree from Crafton Hills Community College.

These community colleges are a great resource of help for their communities. These colleges have people who would love to help you do this task. It is essential that you present a professional resume and cover letter.

  1. The interviewing process:
  2. Practice your interviewing skills. Again, Toastmasters and the community colleges should be able to help you through this step.
  3. Research the organization where you’re applying.
  4. Do not go there asking for a job. Know what the employers do and explain why they need you to help them achieve their goals.
  5. Have questions to ask the interviewer. Show them that you have studied them and know you’re a fit.
  6. Send your follow-up letter to the organization.

(Hint): If you give my office staff grief, I’ll likely not hire you because I ask them how you treated them. Your interview begins when you open the door to my building.

  1. Employment acceptance: You must evaluate the offer, your pay scale or salary, and other benefits of employment there. What is the environment of this potential employer?
  2. Career development and advancement. What will the employer do to help you grow? Will they pay for your schooling? Is there an excellent opportunity for advancement? Will they help you build a strong career and forge strong networking relationships?
  3. Our world is evolving. Not long ago, Sears and K-Mart were thriving organizations, but everything goes through its cycle. Your position may have been phased out due to technology. Do not sit and wait for its process to come back around. Annalize the situation and develop your new Career Develop Strategy.

I prefer the term ethnicity), color, religion, sex, gender, marital status, disability, genetic information, national origin, source of income, Veteran or military status, ancestry, citizenship, primary language or immigration status.
