Repairing For your Inspections

When you are building something on your property and you are expecting an inspector you must prepare your job site for the inspector. You may like the site a little messy but the inspector may cancel your inspection if they fell your asking them to do anything unsafe. There for I’ve made a short list of what I do before an inspection.

  • I walk the job-site from the curb through the inspection site to ensure the path is clear.
  • I make sure any ladders are secured properly and that they extend more than three rungs above the bottom of the roof line.
  • I then have a small deck like table where I have the plans which I have opened and clipped to the table on the page which gives information concerning the task being performed.
  • I have my job card out and a clipboard ready.
  • Sometimes you will notice the inspector is working through an injury ask how you can help them.
  • If there is something new you are preforming ask questions about it. (It ensures them you are working with them)
  • Walk with them and take notes and do not make small talk (be friendly but professional)
  • Confirm what task will be finish and ready for their inspection when you call next time.
  • Make their walking path as simple and clear as possible.
  • If there are obstacles which may be difficult to see I point them out.
  • If I have made a variation from the plan (You can always do more, plans are the minimum I show them and explain why I’ve done so.
  • I dropped a plywood walkway on the rebar so my inspector didn’t need to cross the trench but once and there was no spoil pile to be climbed over. I like to place my spoil on the backside of my forms. This spoil helps keep the form in place during the pouring of concrete and after I’ve removed the stakes, I can add a little dirt on top so as to flood the area creating a shallow pond on top of the concrete to slow down the setting process. Concrete’s comical reaction will take place even when place in water.  Slowly add the water so as not to erode any portion of the surface.
  • As I have helped them onto the job site, I also help them leave. I close gates behind them and thank them.
  • I try to place myself in their position and make their inspection as smooth and clear cut as possible.
