Thie may sound crazy but before you begin shingling but after you have felted the roof you need to read the instructions on the pack of shingles. You do this to get the set backs and the height you step up to remain in the nailing strip. There are two mail type of shingle. The three tab and the metric are styles but there are American Standard and Diametric. But each manufacture has different set back and the nailing needs to be placed in different locations.
Also, the package will give you the normal nails per shingle and the high windage nailing pre shingle. I f you are going to use an air powered tool be sure to set the pressure so that it sinks the fastener in to where it snugs up the shingle. To lose or to deep and the fastener may cut the shingle.
Most people who single now put on a drip edge. This will flip the water away from the unit’s foundation.
The felt should be on top of the drip edge. Fill the first cure of shingles upside down and leave it overhanging the drip edge by 1/4”. I cut the second shingle the distance of the set back. This is done as I travel up the roof and it creates a triangle roughly. I nail for high winds.
You can also shingle in a rectangle by simply laying the complete shingle upside down first and then over lay it with your first cut back shingle and leaving one nail undone until your next course. This method is sometimes used because of obstacles. As long as your nailing is in the proper location and the setbacks are observed.
Snapping a line to show you the setback can be helpful and another line to show the top of every shingle, placement ever three runs or so is good to keep your rows straight.
If you are using three tab the shing cut into three pieces or the tab cut are the caps for the roof. If you are using the metric designer shingle then you may need to purchase caps separately from the shingles.
Be care full to pay attention of the edges. Many roofers career have ended because they stepped of the roofs.
Once it is so hot that you are disturbing the gravel get off the roof or go to a shaded area.
Keep yourself hydrated.
You can cheat a little in the nailing if need to hit and object correctly in the runs.
Be sure to pull permits and do this project when the weather will melt the tabs together.
Use the proper nails to just miss penetrating the roof. Make sure you can but the new shingles on top of the old roof.
Like most projects the prep work will help and is an important part to the process.
