It Is Important to Step Away

I am a real estate broker and General contractor but I am also more than a real estate broker and contractor. One day not so long ago I came home to an empty house. I am use to being alone, but I am talking about being drained, emptied out, exhausted and feeling down. Because of some medical issues I was advised by my doctor to start cutting back on some things. I did.  It was bothering me so I took a walk for a couple miles. The next day I did the same and before I realized it, I was walking every night when it cooled down. I stated talking to people again like the person I was. I stopped feeling down And I believe I had more energy to get through the next day.

Then the guy across the street from me asked me how far I was walking each night. After I told him he said he needed to start walking again also. For a couple times I went over to ask if he wanted to go walking but he always had a reason why he couldn’t then he said he worked hard 6 days a week and got plenty of exercise at work. You may have trouble believing this but building a house is physical work. But there is something different about setting time aside for you self and exercising; even if it is only in your head.

The truth is simple exercising

  • helps you sleep better
  • gives you more energy
  • clears your head of the days stress so you can view things from different perspectives
  • helps you maintain a positive self-image

There are some great benefits from exercising that physical work don’t give. Most of us know staying active is one of the best ways to help our bodies stay healthy. But daily exercise may greatly impact your quality of life. It is recommended that we do 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic actively weekly by the American Heart Association. That can be achieved doing 30 minutes of exercise five time a week. They claim that doing so may:

  • lower blood pressure
  • boost good cholesterol levers
  • improve your blood flow
  • help maintain your weight
  • prevent bone loss which can lead to osteoporosis

I believe when you look good you feel better. When you feel better when you walk into your house and find yourself alone the house doesn’t feel empty. When we feel good, we are more outgoing and those things translate into better odds of success. Some people say others are born lucky. I believe Samuel Goldwyn who said, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” It is important to step away and spend time on yourself. The benefits are numerous. Quality of life is one, but so is longer life expectancy. Consult you doctor to tell them your going to start exercising. They may have some suggestions. They may have some encouragement. Small steps and gradually build up to your space needed. All work and no play may do more than make you a dull person; it may help you find an early grave.
