Tying The Plumbing Together

Tying the plumbing stacks together to reduce penetrations through the roof is done so as to reduce the chances of a leak. You first must look up you local codes to see how many vent stacks your size of pipe is permitted to have. Then instead of running the plumbing through the studs you run it up and through the block and double plates. Leave just enough pipe above the plate to glue a fitting on. Many time you will need to use two angle degree fitting to get the desired angles. By twisting these fittings, you can come to an angle which works for you roof’s pitch.

Using this method has you using the two angles and twisting them until you get the slow rise you desire from the pipe. You want the pipe to clear your ceiling joist but remain under the rafters. I start from an end and work my way toward the center. When I have enough length to do this, I place a nightie on the end piece and a straight pipe to the other pipe I join them with teas.

I keep this process going until I am in the row of rafters I want to use for my penetration. I do one dry fitting section at a time and I grease mark my pieces so I can reassemble them easily. I use the plastic strapping and strap each section securely to the rafters.

I wait until I am sheeting the roof before cutting my last straight run, but I have my stack that will penetrate prepared. Once I am close to the pipes end that will penetrate, I mark and cut the hole through the plywood and finish task. Here I also use the rolling of multiple angles together so that the stack is plumb when it comes through the opening. I like the jacks with the rubber boots an I push it down over the pipe without nailing it until the shingles are installed.
