More Reasons for Vacations

You are mortal, your company is not, and the time may come when you are unable to come to work, then others will need to take over the supervision of your company. A vacation will show you how your company preforms without you at the helm. It may also indicate who is working for the better of the company and who is working for the betterment of themselves. It may indicate an underappreciated employee or an over rated one who is stealing their subordinate’s praise. There is the Peter principle which basically says that employees rise to one level above their competence. [ “The Peter principle states that a person who is competent at their job will earn a promotion to a position that requires different skills. If the promoted person lacks the skills required for the new role, they will be incompetent at the new level, and will not be promoted again.[2] If the person is competent in the new role, they will be promoted again and will continue to be promoted until reaching a level at which they are incompetent. Being incompetent, the individual will not qualify for promotion again, and so will remain stuck at this final placement or Peter’s plateau.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_principle, 7/6/2025] If you notice that has happened in your ranks then you have at least two options. You can ignore it and give the others person’s credit to the wrong person, which may prevent you from discovering the true leaders you need: or you can help educate the person who has risen without the needed skill set.

Sometime going on a vacation lets you know who is who when you return. In this case we are not talking about your vacation but your employees’ vacations. If a manager goes on the vacation and there is no lose in productivity then maybe you have the Peter’s principle at work here or the manager has trained their subordinates so well that they can function in spite of who is missing. If this is the case you may wish to consider promoting them. There is also the flip side of the coin, that once the individual leaves for their vacation the team functions better. When this occurs then you must seek to find out why this happens.

Doing so also help you check on the honesty of your employees. Having another set of eyes on the books may show that someone has been cooking the books. If the subordinates do things which aren’t permitted blatantly then you know that their old supervisor was lacking in that area.

In conclusion, vacations are not only good for the health and well being of the individuals, they are also needed for the health and well-being of the company.
