In today’s marketplace with all the unexpected delays and other hazards which can trip you up it is important that you stick to your budget. I cannot say that I like my budget, but I will say that it keeps me out of trouble. When money come in at a regular pace it is easy to modify your budget a little but when the market slows it is important that you have a budget and that you maintain it. We all have weak spots when it comes to spending. I like to fish and I am getting into ocean fishing on charter boats. I believe this is good for me to get away and relax and just be present in the moment. Fishing allows me to do so. I was looking over the bow of the boat on my last trip and was amazed at the dolphins swimming in front of the bow. There, watching those dolphins all was right with my world and we need
those experience to retain our sanity.
Today I received a call from one of the guys I go ocean fishing with. He wanted me to go surf fishing tomorrow. But I need to get a good rod for throwing the irons to go with my new reel. One was for sale but by the time I drove to the sales location I may as well-paid full price and did something useful with my day. If I would have purchased the rod I would have needed to purchase some YoY o irons and other supplies. I could have done so and maintained my budget, however doing so had a opportunity cost that I wouldn’t like. I would have to miss a planned trip on the charter boat or tighten my budget on my vacation. Neither of these would have been pleasant for me. So, I made the decision to text back and say that it would be best if I missed this trip and stuck to my budget as pained.
Doing so also allowed the guys to know I would not be up for loaning them capital any time soon, nor would I be generous allowing them to use and lose my fishing equipment. There are several advantages of having a budget. As we tighten up our purse strings others take notice and we eliminate some sticky moments. We also tend to better manage our capital and prioritize out spending. Budgeting is not fun, but it produces some beautiful results if we stick to it and prioritize our spending. It is simply the ability to withstand delayed gratification.
