Changing Times

Today as in many bygone eras, it seems like I am hearing that these are changing times. There’s an old John Wayne movie with a scene in it where his movie daughter says, “Poppa It’s not the times that are changing.”  As a child Christmas and birthdays for many seem to never come, as an adult they never seem to leave. Still, this world keeps circling on its same course and spinning at the same rate.  We hear of the crazy thing that governmental officials are going to, or trying to implement.  Yet we do not speak up, we do not exercise our rights we allow they rulers to dictate their crazy schemes upon us.  A man recently lost his life because he exercised his right of freedom of speech. We have endured countless attracts from government officials saying we need to fight while delivering challenges which were insisting people to violence. That is a crime.  Are they going to held accountable? It does not appear so. In fact, it appears that there are some members of our society who are above the law. It is odd that we haven’t had a change to the wording of the Declaration of Independence, seeing how there are different rules for different classes, ethnicity, and social status of people.

Maybe the issue is with a small word which has troubled many for far too long. That word is “ALL” When the declaration of independence was written All did not mean everyone, it meant property owners. Then it meant white male property owners, eventually it meant males, and finally it became or at least so in writing to mean all American citizens. But all has never included everyone.

Are the times changing or are we just adapting to new rules of the same power’s that be. A man lost his life, and we the people are not demanding change. The reason maybe because people have always lost their lives for speaking what they believe to be the truth. The child’s saying is that sticks and stone can break my bones but words can never hurt me. The bible, in many passages tells us the tongue holds the power of life and death. We have been granted the freedom of speech; when will we be granted the freedom of the consequences of our speech. The government has proven, no matter how ignorant it may be, a person in power can legislate idiotic believes into governmental regulations and laws. The problem remains. We cannot legislate morality. A man by the name of Edmund Burke is credited with saying, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” However, we now know he never said that. What Burke said was, “When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.”

When evil prevails, good people are called upon to act. Perhaps the daughters’ lines were correct. “Poppa it’s not the times that are changing.”
